1. The Null Hypothesis and the Alternative Hypothesis

• When making a statistical enquiry, we often put forward a hypothesis (supposition) concerning the population parameter (usually the mean, $\mu$ or the proportion of success, $p$).
• The initial supposition is called the null hypothesis and is denoted by ${\mathrm{H}}_0$.
• ${\mathrm{H}}_0$ is tested against the alternative hypothesis ${\mathrm{H}}_1$ which may indicate a decrease ($<$), an increase ($>$) or a change
